I Bleed Green and White.

Exactly one year ago. October 8th, 2005. Thousands died. Millions left homeless. Bones were crushed, lives were ended, and homes collapsed. Amidst all the chaos a nation rose with great pride and greater empathy unlike anything seen before. Years from now when I tell my grandchildren about their history, I’ll tell them a story about a nation which had forgotten all hope for its lost future and then had recovered it on that fateful day and the weeks after. A story about a nation that rose above ethnic, political, religious, and societal wars to stand together and form a human chain to help the ones in need.

Exactly one year ago, I lost people I knew. An entire family. Friends from high school: one died and one survived after being buried alive for twenty seven hours. There were so many heartbreaking stories. So many heartbreaking pictures. I visited the site of Marghalla Towers after three months. Balcony railings, which had once been covered with clothes to be dried, were now plain. The parking lot was empty of Corollas.

Five years ago I used to go there to visit my best friend. She’s moved since then, obviously. She’s picked up the broken pieces of her life to start all over again. I’m so proud of you. Always have been. I wish I could tell you.

I’m so proud of you, Pakistan. Always have been. My patriotism runs deep. I bleed green and white. Always will.
